National Sports Day

India’s National Sports Day is celebrated every year on August 29. Major Dhyan Chand Singh, a great hockey player, is honored on this day. History of National Sports Day

Every year on August 29, India commemorates National Sports Day. August 29 was picked since it is the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, an Indian hockey icon. Rashtriya Khel Divas is another name for the day. It was first noticed in the year 2012, and it has been recorded every year since then.

Major Dhyan Chand’s feats in hockey won India multiple medals on the world scene, and National Sports Day is commemorated in his honour. He is widely regarded as India’s finest hockey player of all time.

Celebration of National Sports Day

National Sports Day is also widely observed on a national basis. Every year, it is held in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the President of the country presents National Sports Awards to the winners who have improved the tricolor flag’s value worldwide.

Players and former players are recognized with various accolades, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, and Dronacharya Award, as part of the National Sports Award. On this day, the “Dhyan Chand Award” is given in addition to all of these prizes.

Following Major Dhyan Chand’s death in 1979, the Indian Postal Department paid tribute to him by issuing stamps in his honour. The National Stadium of Delhi was also christened Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Delhi, as a memorial to him.
