International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Every year on June 26th, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is commemorated. On December 7, 1987, the United Nations General Assembly conducted its 93rd plenary conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The UN General Assembly recalled its 40/122 resolution of December 13, 1985, to combat this threat.

The UN Secretary-General took the first step by convening an international conference on drug abuse and unlawful distribution at the ministerial level in Vienna, Austria. Since 1988, the 26th of June has been marked as a symbolic occasion commemorating the end of the opium trade in Guangdong.

Illicit drugs and their trafficking constitute a significant health hazard to humankind, which we cannot ignore. Long-term usage can lead to poor health, disease transmission through needle sharing, poor self-hygiene, psychological disorders, and death from overdose, among other things.
