International Day for Biological Diversity

International Day for Biological Diversity

The terms “biological” and “diversity” combine to form the term “biodiversity.” It encompasses all forms of life on Earth, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms.

It also refers to the communities they create and the places they inhabit. The reason behind the existence of day is very simple, in layman’s terms it is to tell people the importance of biological diversity in our life.

We all must protect Earth on each step and must protect the resources. We should all remember, that ‘These Resources are not free for us, we have just borrowed from Earth, and we must return it back safely’.

Biodiversity, then, is the collection of life forms and their interactions with one another and the rest of the environment that has made Earth a uniquely hospitable location for humans. Without a doubt, biodiversity provides a wide range of commodities and services that keep our life going.

The International Day for Biological Diversity has a long history

The International Day for Biological Diversity was first observed in 1993 when the 29th of December was chosen to educate the world about the value of biodiversity. In the year 2000, this was changed to the 22nd of May. Too many winter holidays were interfering with meaningful celebrations in many countries.

Monoculture farming’s dominance over the world has resulted in some quite spectacular and extreme repercussions. Unbeknownst to most people, most of the globe only eats one sort of banana, and it isn’t the same as it was only a few decades ago.

A whole species of banana was killed off by disease due to monoculture farming, leading to the development of our current strain. We’re currently set up for the same thing to happen again if biodiversity isn’t preserved.

Every year, a theme is chosen to educate the globe on the wide range of topics under the umbrella of biodiversity, ranging from water and marine biodiversity to forest and sustainable development issues.

It is important to understand the importance of place we have been living is, and to save our resources as much as we can at one time.

The International Day for Biological Diversity is being commemorated.

Biodiversity celebrations can be both enjoyable and delicious, especially if you take advantage of the opportunity to visit local farmers’ markets and co-ops to sample new food.

Biodiversity may provide a delightful new experience to your table, whether you use heritage tomatoes in your gardening or cooking, or try one of the rainbows of non-orange carrots available. On this day people look forward to eating such fresh vegetables and fruits served by the farmers.

Joining a local park clean-up crew and assisting in removing unwanted species from your local environment is another way to celebrate biodiversity. These volunteer teams will come together to remove plants that are threatening the biodiversity of the local fauna by taking over naturally grow zones.

Another approach to commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity is to get out into the world and appreciate the various forms of life available in your area. From the insects crawling through the grass and mud to the blooms we carelessly throw together as “wildflowers,” even a local park might have an astounding variety of life you’ve never noticed.

Whatever the situation may be, get out there and enjoy our natural world’s diversity every day, not only on International Day for Biological Diversity

Signs and symbols

The International Day for Biological Diversity is a series of events aimed at drawing attention to the Biological Diversity Convention. A stylized representation of a twig or branch with three green leaves serves as the convention’s symbol.

The leaves may be just outlines or green blocks, depending on the background. A piece of artwork is commissioned each year to reflect the theme. Different facets of the International Day for Biological Diversity are represented through details of the artwork.
