
Yoga has spent years sitting somewhere between exercise, meditation and alternative medicine. Ask one person and it’s a stretching routine. Ask another and it’s a spiritual practice. Then there are claims that yoga can fix almost everything from stress to heart disease.
Science shows us a less exciting but more captivating answer. These days, yoga is being researched by researchers to not just check how flexible they feel or whether a person calms down after a session, but also to the extent of it all.
They have studied chronic pain, stress, anxiety, blood pressure and even changes in gene expression.
Some findings are encouraging. Others are still early.
And that difference matters.
Researchers Are Looking at What Happens at the Gene Level
One of the more interesting areas of recent research involves gene expression.
This is sometimes misunderstood as yoga somehow “changing your DNA.” That’s not what the research says.
Your DNA sequence doesn’t need to change for the activity of certain genes to change. Gene expression refers to whether particular genes become more or less active under different conditions.
A 2025 systematic review looked at 11 randomized controlled trials conducted between 2015 and 2024, involving more than 700 adults.
Researchers found changes in the expression of several genes associated with inflammation, immune regulation, stress, DNA repair and mitochondrial function among people participating in yoga interventions. Several studies, for example, reported reduced expression of pro-inflammatory pathways.
That’s genuinely interesting.
It is not, however, proof that yoga can “rewrite your genes” or reverse ageing. The studies were relatively small, used different yoga interventions and looked at different populations.
What they do suggest is that mind-body practices may influence biological processes in measurable ways.
A decade ago, that would have sounded like a fairly unusual area of yoga research. Today, researchers can actually look for those molecular changes.
Breathwork May Be One of the Simpler Places to Start
Yoga isn’t only about poses.
Breathing practices, usually grouped under pranayama, have been studied for their effects on stress and the autonomic nervous system.
Slow, controlled breathing can influence the balance between sympathetic activity — associated with alertness and the body’s stress response — and parasympathetic activity, which is involved in rest and recovery.
This is not a complicated practice of yoga which needs to be done. There is a big difference between a person who sits quiet and deliberately slows down their breathing and another who takes part in a very demanding and physically exhausting session of yoga. As the understanding about these two types of practices is growing, researchers more and more are studying separately the effects of these practices.
For people interested primarily in stress management, breathing exercises may therefore be a more practical starting point than trying to master difficult poses.
That doesn’t mean pranayama should be treated as a medical treatment for anxiety disorders. But as part of a broader stress-management routine, the evidence around controlled breathing is worth paying attention to.
Yoga and Chronic Pain Have Been Studied Much More Extensively
Chronic low-back pain is one area where we have considerably more research.
A 2022 review of 21 studies involving 2,223 participants found that yoga was slightly better than no exercise for low-back pain. The improvements were generally small, however, and yoga wasn’t clearly superior to other forms of exercise.
Another systematic review involving 27 studies and more than 2,700 participants found improvements in pain intensity, disability and physical functioning compared with passive control groups.
That’s a much more useful way to understand the evidence than saying “yoga cures back pain.”
For some people with chronic low-back pain, yoga can be one reasonable form of movement. It isn’t necessarily better than every other type of appropriate exercise.
The American College of Physicians has also included yoga among the non-drug options that can be considered for chronic low-back pain.
People with existing injuries or medical conditions may need poses modified, particularly when beginning a new practice.
The PTSD Results Are Interesting, but They Need Context
One of the strongest numbers in discussions around yoga and PTSD comes from a randomized study involving 64 women with chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD.
After a 10-week trauma-informed yoga program, 52% of participants in the yoga group no longer met the criteria for PTSD.
It’s an impressive result.
But it came from one relatively small study, and that’s exactly why it shouldn’t be turned into “yoga treats half of PTSD cases.”
The broader evidence isn’t that certain yet.
The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes research on yoga for PTSD as mildly positive but still preliminary.
For someone living with PTSD, yoga may be useful as part of a larger treatment plan. It should not be presented as a replacement for professional mental-health care.
What About Blood Pressure and Heart Health?
Blood pressure is another area that has attracted plenty of yoga research.
Studies and reviews have found that yoga may produce modest reductions in blood pressure, particularly when practiced consistently. But results vary depending on the type of yoga, length of the program and health of the people being studied.
This is where health headlines can become misleading.
A study showing a reduction in blood pressure after several weeks of yoga doesn’t mean someone taking blood-pressure medication should stop treatment and start doing yoga instead.
Exercise, diet, sleep, body weight, stress management and prescribed medication can all play a role in managing hypertension.
Yoga can fit into that picture.
It shouldn’t replace the picture.
The Amount of Yoga Research Is Bigger Than Many People Realize
The scientific interest in yoga isn’t based on a handful of wellness studies.
A retrospective analysis published in 2020 examined yoga-related trials registered through the World Health Organization’s International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Researchers identified 2,919 registered yoga trials up to February 2020.
More than 97% were interventional studies.
Researchers were studying yoga in relation to conditions including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, anxiety and depression.
The number itself doesn’t prove yoga works for all of those conditions. Clinical trials can produce positive, negative or inconclusive results.
What it does show is that yoga has become a serious subject of medical and behavioral research.
That’s quite different from treating it simply as a wellness trend.
There’s Another Problem Researchers Keep Running Into: People Have to Keep Doing It
A treatment can look promising in a study and still be difficult to use in real life.
Yoga has that problem too.
A study involving U.S. military veterans with chronic low-back pain found that only 42% of participants in the earlier groups attended at least half of their in-person yoga sessions.
Researchers then introduced strategies designed to improve attendance.
In later groups, the proportion attending at least half of the sessions increased to 59%, although the difference wasn’t statistically significant.
That finding isn’t as exciting as talking about genes or the nervous system, but it may be more useful for someone actually thinking about starting yoga.
Consistency matters.
Doing an ambitious 90-minute routine for three days and then stopping isn’t the same as following a manageable practice for several months.
The “best” type of yoga on paper isn’t particularly useful if you dislike it enough to quit.
Not Every New Yoga Trend Has the Same Evidence Behind It
This is also where traditional yoga and the modern wellness industry can get mixed together.
Aerial yoga, yoga retreats, hot yoga, cold exposure combined with yoga and increasingly elaborate wellness experiences may all be enjoyable.
Enjoyment itself has value if it keeps someone active.
But a popular practice isn’t automatically an evidence-based treatment.
The amount and quality of research varies considerably between different yoga styles and health claims.
If someone enjoys aerial yoga because it makes exercise interesting, that’s a perfectly reasonable reason to do it.
It doesn’t need an unsupported medical claim attached to it.
So, What Does the Evidence Support?
If you’re healthy and simply interested in yoga, you don’t need to turn it into a medical project.
A beginner can start with a manageable routine built around basic movement, breathing and relaxation. The goal should be something you can continue rather than the most impressive routine you can complete once.
For chronic low-back pain, research suggests yoga can offer small improvements and may work about as well as some other forms of exercise.
For stress and general wellbeing, research is also encouraging. NCCIH notes studies showing possible benefits for stress management, mental and emotional health, sleep and healthy habits.
For more specific medical conditions, the answer becomes more dependent on the individual condition and the quality of available evidence.
Yoga is generally safe if you are doing the right type of yoga for your needs; however, you may still suffer an injury. Older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with medical conditions may have to modify certain yoga postures or even refrain from doing them altogether.
And if yoga is being used alongside treatment for a medical or mental-health condition, it makes sense to discuss it with the healthcare professional managing that condition.
Yoga Doesn’t Need Miracle Claims to Be Useful
Perhaps the most interesting thing about modern yoga research is that it makes some of the exaggerated claims less necessary.
We don’t need to say yoga rewrites DNA.
Researchers can study changes in gene expression.
We don’t need to say it cures chronic pain.
There is evidence that it can produce modest improvements in some pain conditions.
And we don’t need to claim that breathing exercises magically reset the body.
Researchers can measure changes associated with controlled breathing and stress regulation.
There are still plenty of unanswered questions. Studies differ in size, yoga style, frequency and the people participating in them. Some areas have years of clinical evidence behind them; others are only beginning to be explored.
That’s normal science.
Yoga doesn’t become less interesting because the answer isn’t “it cures everything.”
If anything, knowing where the evidence is strong, where it’s modest and where it’s still uncertain makes the practice more useful — because people can decide what role yoga actually deserves in their lives.
