Apple September 2026 Event: iPhone 18 Pro, Foldable iPhone and Everything Expected

Apple’s September 2026 event could look very different from the usual iPhone launch.

They have named it “Surprise and Shine” in the press and according to the information available, the occasion will happen Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Apple Park in Cupertino. While most people anticipate the unveilings of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max to steal the headlines, the main spotlight shall probably be on a foldable iPhone from Apple. The reason why a foldable iPhone would capture Apple’s attention is because it’s somewhat a departure for them: they haven’t offered foldables before!

If current reports are accurate, Apple may also break from its familiar launch schedule by keeping the regular iPhone 18 out of the September lineup and moving it to spring 2027.

That would leave September focused almost entirely on Apple’s premium devices.

And after years of watching Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers develop foldable phones, Apple may finally be ready to enter that market itself.

The Wednesday timing would also be slightly unusual. Apple often holds its September iPhone events on a Tuesday, although its schedule has shifted in previous years when holidays or other significant dates affected the normal launch calendar.

What to Expect From the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max aren’t expected to completely reinvent the physical design of the iPhone.

Instead, most of the rumored changes are happening inside the devices.

One of the more interesting possibilities is a variable-aperture main camera. A mechanically adjustable aperture could give the camera greater control over incoming light and depth of field rather than relying entirely on computational photography.

Apple is also expected to continue reducing the visible area used by the Dynamic Island.

Another major upgrade could be Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which is expected to move to a 2nm manufacturing process. If that happens, it would represent an important process change for Apple’s mobile processors and could improve performance and power efficiency.

Apple’s own C2 modem is another rumored addition. Apple has been gradually reducing its dependence on outside modem suppliers, so expanding the use of its own cellular technology would fit that direction.

Price, however, remains one of the bigger unanswered questions.

Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Could Steal the Show

Current reports point toward an outer display of approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches and a much larger 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner display when the phone is unfolded.

That would make it closer to a compact smartphone when closed and a small tablet when opened.

Apple is also rumored to use a titanium-based construction to keep the device thin while working to reduce one of the biggest visual complaints surrounding foldable phones: the crease running through the flexible display.

Touch ID Could Make an Unexpected Return

One of the stranger rumors surrounding the foldable iPhone is the possible return of Touch ID.

Instead of placing Face ID hardware inside the foldable display, Apple may integrate a fingerprint sensor into the power button.

That’s not a completely unfamiliar design. Apple has already used power-button Touch ID on some iPad models.

The foldable is also rumored to include two front-facing cameras and a dual-camera system on the rear.

But almost every premium feature being discussed comes with another expectation: a very high price.

Reports have suggested that Apple’s first foldable could cost more than $2,000, which would make it considerably more expensive than a standard flagship iPhone.

The Foldable iPhone May Be Hard to Buy at Launch

Even if Apple announces the foldable alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, that doesn’t necessarily mean all three phones will reach stores at exactly the same time.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that production could initially be constrained because of manufacturing challenges surrounding the foldable device.

If those reports prove accurate, Apple could announce the phone in September while shipping it later or making it available in relatively limited quantities at first.

That’s worth keeping in mind because a first-generation Apple product entering an entirely new hardware category could attract significant early demand.

There May Be No Regular iPhone 18 This September

This could end up being an even bigger strategic change than the foldable itself.

Apple has traditionally introduced its main iPhone family together in September.
