Gold Before Dhanteras 2026

Dhanteras‍‍‍ in 2023 falls on the 6th November, with Diwali on the same month of the 8th, bringing the usual question among family WhatsApp groups: is gold too expensive right now? Ahead of the festival rush, let’s look at the numbers for October 12 as they tell us, explore why the price in your city is the way it is, and finally discuss the practical considerations that are more important than trying to guess the ‍‍‍market.

Where gold stands today?

As‍‍‍ per daily rates published by HDFC SKY today, 24-carat gold is priced at ₹1,50,980 per 10 grams while 22-carat and 18-carat go for₹1,38,400 and ₹1,13,240 respectively.

Goodreturns shows a very similar picture, with 24-carat around ₹15,141 per gram and 22-carat around ₹13,879 per gram.

Pricing was ₹270 higher per 10 grammes on Monday. Currently, prices are about ₹1,800 higher than they were a week ago.

Be cautious when comparing information from different sources on the Web: price varies depending on the city, the seller and the inclusion of a price quote that covers taxes and customs duties. A few websites just take the international price and translate it into rupees, which results in a significantly lower amount than what you will be quoted by a local jeweller. When something doesn’t make sense, the price stated by your local jewellery store with a signed receipt is probably the most accurate one.

Silver has also been making headlines recently. According to a report, Goodreturns quoted the price of silver at about ₹2,39,900 per kilo today. Also, worldwide silver has climbed around 16,5 percent in the last twelve ‍‍‍months.

A puzzle: gold is down globally, but not in your wallet

Here’s something that surprises people. In dollar terms, gold is trading around $4,204 an ounce, which is about 2.2% lower than a month ago. It hit an all-time high of roughly $5,608 in January 2026, so it’s currently around 25% below that peak. If you only watched the international price, you might expect Indian jewellery to be getting cheaper.

It isn’t, and one big reason is the rupee. It was around ₹90.91 to the dollar in late February; it’s now closer to ₹95.65, a drop of roughly 5%. Since gold is priced in dollars globally, a weaker rupee makes the same ounce cost more here. Add import duty, GST and making charges, and the sticker price in India can stay high even when the global price cools.

This is the same pressure we’ve been tracking in our market coverage: a weaker rupee, record foreign selling of Indian equities, and elevated oil prices are all connected. It’s one reason the usual rule of thumb, “check the global price,” tells you only half the story for an Indian buyer.

What a jewellery bill really looks like?

The headline gold rate isn’t what you pay. Goodreturns gives a handy worked example for 10 grams of 22-carat jewellery:

  • Value of the gold itself: ₹1,38,790
  • Making charges: ₹16,655
  • GST at 3%: ₹4,663
  • Total: ₹1,60,108

So in this example the final bill is about ₹21,000 above the raw gold value, and most of that gap is making charges, which jewellers set themselves. That’s why making charges are often the best place to negotiate. They vary by design, brand and shop, and festive offers frequently discount them.

A practical checklist before Dhanteras

None of this is financial advice, but these are the checks that tend to save real money and trouble:

Insist on BIS hallmarking. Gold jewellery sold in India should carry a BIS hallmark with a unique six-character HUID code. You can verify it using the BIS Care app. If a piece has no hallmark, ask why.

Ask for the making charge in writing, as a percentage and an amount. Compare two or three jewellers for the same design weight. The difference can be bigger than a month of price movement in gold.

Know the carat you’re paying for. 24-carat is purest and is what coins and bars are made of. 22-carat is the usual choice for jewellery because it’s stronger. Don’t pay 24-carat rates for 22-carat items.

Check buy-back and exchange terms. What a shop gives you when you sell or exchange later is often lower than the price you paid, because of deductions. If you’re buying partly as a store of value, read the buy-back policy before you pay.

Get the invoice itemised. It should show gold weight, rate, making charges, any stone weight and cost, and GST separately.

Think about coins and bars if you want pure gold, not design. They usually carry lower making charges than jewellery, though they also have premiums and buy-back conditions of their own.

Should you wait for a dip?

Nobody can reliably tell you that. Gold has moved sharply this year, from a record in January to well below it now, and a single month has seen it fall about 2%. A few things are genuinely uncertain: where the rupee goes, where oil prices go, and how global markets respond to interest rate changes, including the RBI’s recent rate hike. Each of those can push the domestic price in either direction.

What you can control is the part that’s most predictable: how much you pay in making charges, whether the piece is hallmarked, and how much of your festive budget you want locked in gold versus something else. Many families also split their purchase, buying a small amount on Dhanteras for tradition and spreading the rest over time rather than trying to time one day. That’s a personal choice rather than a rule.

The bottom line

Gold‍‍‍ price in India currently is expensive due to multiple factors operating simultaneously viz., dollar which has retreated from its peak, the rupee which has weakened; in addition to taxes and charges.

With Dhanteras on November 6th, there remains almost four weeks that you will have to compare your gold jewelers, check hallmarks, and set your budget.

Spending your time in making the charges and doing hallmark checks will most likely matter more than guessing tomorrow’s ‍‍‍price.

Gold and silver rates change through the day and differ by city and seller. Figures here reflect published rates as of October 12, 2026.
