Bali Jatra 2026 will be held in Cuttack from Tuesday, 24 November to Tuesday, 1 December 2026. The week-long fair opens on Kartik Purnima on the banks of the Mahanadi and is often described as Odisha’s largest open-air trade fair. This year the district administration is using both the upper and lower fairgrounds, banning plastic and foam, and raising stall prices. Here are the dates, what is new in 2026, how the stall auction works and how to plan a visit.
Bali Jatra 2026 dates
- Fair dates: 24 November to 1 December 2026, as announced by Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde at a preparatory meeting, The New Indian Express reported. The official Balijatra website shows the same dates.
- Opening day: Kartik Purnima, Tuesday 24 November 2026. According to Drik Panchang, the Purnima tithi runs from 11:42 PM on 23 November to 8:23 PM on 24 November (New Delhi timings).
- Venue: the Balijatra grounds on the bank of the Mahanadi in Cuttack, with both the upper and lower grounds in use this year.
- Last year: the 2025 edition ran from 5 to 12 November.
What is Bali Jatra?
Bali Jatra literally means “voyage to Bali”. The fair remembers the sea traders of ancient Kalinga, as Odisha was then known, who sailed in large boats called boitas to Bali, Java, Sumatra and other parts of South-East Asia. The official website describes it as a socio-cultural event with a history of about a thousand years, celebrated every year from Kartika Purnima in Cuttack.
The ritual heart of the day is Boita Bandana. Before dawn on Kartik Purnima, families across Odisha float small lamp-lit boats on rivers, ponds and the sea. The ritual is said to recall the families who saw the sailors off at the start of the trading season.
The same full moon is one of the busiest nights in the Indian festival year. Varanasi lights its ghats for Dev Deepawali on 24 November, and Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026 on the same day.
What is new at Bali Jatra 2026
Both fairgrounds in use
Collector Shinde said the fair would be held on both the upper and lower Balijatra grounds this year, with priority on public safety. Departments were told to check electrical, stage and fire safety, inspect swings and joy rides, increase parking space, improve lighting and install more CCTV cameras. A special traffic route map is being prepared for vehicles and crowd control.
Plastic-free fair
Plastic and foam food containers and bags will be banned in and around the grounds. Traders will be asked to serve food on sal leaves and use cloth bags for other items. At a review meeting chaired by Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, the fair was again discussed as a plastic-free and environment-friendly event, The Samaja reported.
Handloom stalls and a Bali connection
According to the same report, the state government has proposed a grant of ₹10 crore for the event, and the Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) will set up 500 stalls for Odisha’s handloom and handicraft products. A delegation from Bali is expected to visit, and a special pavilion with a digital information wall will present the historical links between Bali and ancient Kalinga. Cultural programmes and competitions are also planned.
Stall booking and plot auction
If you were hoping to book a stall, note that online stall registration on the official website closed on 1 November 2026 at 11 PM. Only applicants aged 18 and above could apply, and an individual or institution could make up to three registrations.
The plot auction began on 3 November and runs until 10 November at seven counters set up at Barabati Palace, the Collector’s office and the Sub-Collector’s office, Prameya News reported. Key points from that report:
- The base price has gone up from ₹50 to ₹60 per square foot. The rate had been unchanged since 2022.
- A 10 x 10 ft plot now costs at least ₹6,000 before any competitive bidding.
- There are more than 1,600 plots this year, and around 300, mostly corner plots, are being auctioned.
- An auction for a plot will not go ahead if any registered bidder for it is absent. Officials wait two hours and try to contact the absent bidder by phone.
- The base-price deposit is not refunded if a registered bidder fails to take part.
Small traders have objected to the price rise and to auctions running at several places at the same time.
What to see at the fair
Bali Jatra is part trade fair, part carnival. Expect long rows of stalls selling Odisha handloom and handicrafts, including Cuttack’s silver filigree work, alongside food stalls, household goods, giant wheels and other rides, and cultural programmes on the fair’s stages. The boat-shaped gateway at the entrance, lit up at night, is the fair’s most photographed spot.
Planning your visit
When to go
The opening day and the first weekend, 28 and 29 November, will be the most crowded. Weekday afternoons are easier for shopping, while evenings are best for the lights and stage shows. If you want to see Boita Bandana, be at a riverbank or ghat before sunrise on 24 November.
Getting there
Cuttack is about 30 km from Bhubaneswar. The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack railway station is on the Howrah-Chennai main line. With heavy crowds and traffic diversions likely, it is easier to park well away from the grounds or take an auto for the last stretch.
Where to stay
Cuttack has a limited number of hotels, so many visitors stay in Bhubaneswar and drive in for the evening. Book early if you want to be in Cuttack itself around Kartik Purnima.
Practical tips
Carry a cloth bag, because plastic bags are banned at the fair this year. Keep phones and wallets secure in the crowd, and agree on a meeting point with your group.
If you are planning a longer trip around the full moon, Bihar’s Sonepur Mela 2026 runs from 22 November to 23 December, and our India festival calendar for 2026-27 lists other dates worth building a trip around.
