Cattle being led through the Sonepur cattle fair in Bihar, from a 1913 lantern slide

Sonepur Mela 2026 will run for 32 days, from 22 November to 23 December 2026, at Sonepur in Bihar’s Saran district. The fair is also known as the Harihar Kshetra Mela. It is held on the land where the Gandak meets the Ganga, opposite Patna, and grew up around the Hariharnath temple. It began as a huge animal market and is now just as much a pilgrimage, a rural carnival and a winter day trip from Patna. Below are the confirmed dates, what is planned this year, how to get there and where to stay.

Sonepur Mela 2026 dates at a glance

  • Dates: Sunday, 22 November to Wednesday, 23 December 2026 (32 days)
  • Kartik Purnima snan (holy dip): 23 to 24 November, the busiest days at the ghats
  • Book fair: 17 to 23 December, in the last week of the mela
  • Venue: Harihar Kshetra, Sonepur, Saran district, Bihar
  • Organisers: Saran district administration with the Bihar Tourism Department

The 22 November to 23 December window comes from a Dainik Jagran report on the 2026 dates. The same dates appear in Bihar Tourism’s own tender notice for the Nakhas area of the 2026 mela. Some older pages, including the Incredible India listing, still show earlier dates, so go by the state notices.

Why Sonepur Mela matters

The Ministry of Tourism’s Incredible India page calls Sonepur one of the largest cattle fairs in Asia. Its roots are religious. Local tradition places the Gajendra Moksha story here: Lord Vishnu saved an elephant king, Gajendra, from the jaws of a crocodile in the river. The Hariharnath temple, dedicated to Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Har) together, is the spiritual centre of the fair. That is why the biggest crowds arrive for the dip at the confluence on Kartik Purnima, before visiting the temple.

The animal trade has changed over the decades. Elephants are no longer traded as they once were, but cattle, horses and other animals still come in. Stalls selling farm tools, handicrafts, clothes, furniture and household goods fill the lanes, and the fair still works as a giant rural market for north Bihar.

What is planned for 2026

Jagran’s reporting on the plans for this year’s mela lists a full programme across the 32 days:

  • Religious events: a maha-aarti at the ghats, Ramlila performances and Bhagwat katha.
  • Traditional sports: a boat race on the river, dangal (wrestling) and kite flying.
  • Cultural programmes: evening shows with artists from different zones of the country, with folk, Bhojpuri and film music on the main stage.
  • Exhibitions: government department stalls and displays in the Nakhas area, the traditional heart of the fair grounds.
  • Book fair: from 17 to 23 December.

The exact day-by-day stage schedule is usually released close to the opening, so check the Saran district website in mid-November.

Crowd and safety arrangements

Saran District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivastava has set up 14 separate cells to manage the mela, Jagran reported. The plan divides the fair area into two zones and ten sub-zones, with drone monitoring and at least 500 toilets. SDRF teams and divers will be posted at the main bathing points, including Kali Ghat, Sadhu Gachhi, the old Gandak bridge and Pahleja ghat. On the Kartik Purnima days, expect road diversions and parking well away from the ghats.

How to reach Sonepur

The Saran district’s how-to-reach page sets out the main routes:

  • By road: Sonepur is about 30 km from Patna, across the Ganga by the Gandhi Setu or JP Setu and on to Hajipur. Buses, shared autos and taxis run from Patna.
  • By air: Jay Prakash Narayan Airport in Patna is about 31 km away.
  • By train: Sonepur is a junction on the East Central Railway, and Hajipur and Patna Junction are close by. Festival special trains often run in this season.

The weeks before the mela are also the busiest of the year on trains to Bihar. Chhath Puja falls from 13 to 16 November, so book early if you are travelling from Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in Patna or Hajipur and drive in for the day. Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) also runs a tourist village at the fair with tents and Swiss cottages. In 2025 these started at ₹3,000 a night for Indian visitors and ₹5,000 for foreign tourists, The Times of India reported. The 2026 tariff had not been published at the time of writing, so check BSTDC’s site before booking. Rooms near the fair fill quickly around Kartik Purnima.

Tips for visiting

  • Pick your days. Go on 23 or 24 November for the bathing festival and the biggest crowds. For a calmer visit with the market in full swing, go in the first week of December.
  • Go early. Mornings are best for the animal market and the ghats. Evenings are for the cultural shows.
  • Dress for winter. December nights by the river are cold, and fog can delay trains and road traffic.
  • Keep valuables close. Crowds are heavy, so carry little cash and keep your phone secure.
  • Respect the temple. Remove footwear at the Hariharnath temple and the ghats.

Combine it with other November fairs

Kartik Purnima on 24 November is a big day across north India. Pushkar Mela closes on the same full moon in Rajasthan, and Varanasi lights its ghats for Dev Deepawali on 24 November. Since you cannot be in all three places, pick one for the full moon and visit the others on different days. Our winter travel guide for India has more ideas for routes and booking windows.
