The Wangala Festival 2026, also called the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival, will be held from 11 to 14 November 2026 at Wangala A'dam (Wangala Adam) in Chibragre near Tura, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. This is the Golden Jubilee, the 50th edition of the festival that began in 1976. Organisers say they plan about 1,000 drums, 1,000 women dancers and 500 traditional artistes for the main programme. Here are the verified dates, day-by-day themes, how the wider jubilee week is shaped, and how to plan a visit.
Wangala Festival 2026 dates and venue
- Main festival: 11 to 14 November 2026, according to a 4 November Highland Post report and a Meghalaya government press note on the Golden Jubilee.
- Venue: Wangala A'dam / Garo Heritage Village at Chibragre near Tura, West Garo Hills. Coverage of the 2026 edition points to Chibragre, not the older Asanang venue used in some past years.
- Scale: festival committee Chairman Ronald Rikman Ch. Sangma told the press the Golden Jubilee aims for about 1,000 drummers, 1,000 women dancers and 500 traditional artistes. About 1,700 drummers applied; the committee said it could take only 1,000 for logistics reasons.
A June 2026 Highland Post note had mentioned 12 to 14 November while talks with the tourism minister were ongoing. Later briefings and the government press material settle on 11 to 14 November for the four-day main festival. Always reconfirm with local notices closer to travel.
The Shillong Times reported the same Chibragre venue after a 4 November press conference at Wangala Adam, and named expected guests under discussion, including national and state leaders. Guest lists can still change; do not treat every name in early media briefings as a confirmed on-stage appearance until organisers publish a final protocol note.
What is Wangala?
Wangala is the Garo post-harvest thanksgiving festival, offered to Misi Saljong (the sun god of fertility) after the crops are in. Over five decades the Hundred Drums edition has grown from a community gathering into one of Meghalaya's best-known cultural events, built around the synchronized beating of traditional A'chik drums, dance and ritual.
The Golden Jubilee is meant to pass that practice to younger Garo performers and to invite neighbouring communities. Highland Post reported teams from Assam (including Kamrup and Goalpara), Karbi Anglong, Nagaland and Tripura, plus smaller Garo sub-tribes such as Ruga, Chibok, Megam and Atong. The committee also said the Wangala A'dam ground has been expanded to handle the larger performer count and the expected crowd.
If you have only seen Wangala in photographs of 100 drums, expect a different visual this year. The festival's common name still carries "Hundred Drums," but the 2026 plan is built around roughly ten times that number for the jubilee field.
Day-by-day programme (as briefed on 4 November)
According to the festival committee's press briefing reported by Highland Post:
- Day 1 (11 November): inauguration, the first round of the 1,000-drums performance, and the opening of an exhibition area with more than 300 stalls for local products, ornaments, attire and souvenirs.
- Day 2 (12 November): the traditional Rugala ceremony and another drums performance.
- Day 3 (13 November): the main Wangala day, with the sacred Sasat Soa ritual and special performances by children.
- Day 4 (14 November): indigenous sports and games, folk song competitions and prize distribution.
Exact stage timings, ticketed zones and entry rules were not fully published in that briefing. Treat the themes as the planning skeleton and check daily announcements on site. If you want the drums spectacle, days 1 and 2 are the clearest fits from the published outline. If you want the ritual core, plan for 13 November and follow local guidance on where visitors may stand.
Wider Golden Jubilee week
The same Highland Post report said the wider programme starts before the main four days:
- 10 km marathon: 7 November 2026.
- Indo-Bangla football match in Tura: 10 November 2026.
Separately, an 7 October Highland Post report quoted Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma saying the Bangladesh contingent would not participate in this edition of the festival itself. Do not assume a Bangladeshi cultural troupe on the Wangala stage based on older editions. The football fixture on 10 November is listed as a separate sporting event in Tura.
How this fits a Northeast November trip
Mid-November in Garo Hills sits just ahead of other big winter festivals. Nagaland's Hornbill Festival 2026 runs from 1 to 10 December at Kisama. If you are building a longer circuit, our India festival calendar for 2026-27 and the winter travel guide help sequence dates. On the plains later in the month, Bali Jatra 2026 in Cuttack and Pushkar Mela 2026 offer a different kind of fair atmosphere, while Gujarat's Rann Utsav 2026 is already into its tent-city season.
Planning tips for Chibragre
Getting there
Tura is the nearest major town in West Garo Hills. Guwahati is the usual air and rail gateway for Meghalaya's western side; from there travellers continue by road toward Tura and then to Chibragre. Road times vary with weather and traffic, so build buffer into same-day plans. Overnight buses and shared sumos are common; private cabs cost more but help if you are carrying camera gear or travelling with elders.
Where to stay
Hotel inventory around Tura fills quickly for big festival weeks. Book early, and ask hosts about transport to Wangala A'dam on peak evenings. If everything in Tura is full, check smaller lodges on the approach roads and confirm how late vehicles still return after the drums finish.
What to carry
November evenings in the hills can be cool. Carry a light jacket, cash for stalls that may not take cards, drinking water, and a reusable bag. Keep phones charged; network coverage can be uneven outside Tura. Ear protection helps if you will stand close to the drum line for long sets.
Respect the ritual days
Sasat Soa on 13 November is described as a sacred ritual day. Follow local guidance on photography, seating and movement near ceremonial spaces. Dress modestly for the ritual segments even if other days feel more like an open fair.
