Eden Park in Auckland under floodlights at dusk during a cricket match

The India vs New Zealand ODI series 2026 starts on Wednesday, 4 November at Eden Park in Auckland, three days after the T20I leg of the tour ends. All five matches start at 7:30 AM IST, according to the BCCI’s squad announcement, so this is an early-morning series for Indian fans. This preview covers the full schedule, both of India’s split squads (including the 30 October changes), New Zealand’s squad, where to watch, and why this series matters after January’s result.

India vs New Zealand ODI 2026 schedule

India play five ODIs in 12 days across four venues. The dates and IST start times come from the BCCI, and the venues from The Indian Express:

The 3rd ODI falls on Govardhan Puja and the 4th ODI on the first day of Chhath, so check our Diwali 2026 calendar if you’re juggling puja timings with a 7:30 AM start. After the ODIs come two Tests: 19 to 23 November in Wellington and 27 November to 1 December at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

India’s ODI squad for New Zealand

The selectors named two squads: one for the first three ODIs under Shubman Gill and one for the last two under Shreyas Iyer. This lets Gill, India’s Test captain, prepare for the Test series. On 30 October the BCCI updated both squads.

1st to 3rd ODIs (updated)

Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy (first ODI only).

4th and 5th ODIs (updated)

Shreyas Iyer (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper, vice-captain), Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (wicketkeeper), Mohammed Siraj, Yash Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav.

What changed on 30 October

  • Prasidh Krishna is out of the ODI series. He had been picked subject to fitness clearance while recovering from a hamstring injury. The BCCI said he needs more time to build his workload, and he will play for India A in the third four-day game against New Zealand A if he clears his return-to-play assessment.
  • Nitish Kumar Reddy will play only the first ODI. He then joins India A for the third four-day match for practice before the Tests.
  • Mohammed Siraj joins India A for the second four-day game against New Zealand A, starting 31 October, and stays in both ODI squads.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra received his first India call-up for the last two ODIs, Cricbuzz reported. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in both squads.

New Zealand’s ODI squad

New Zealand have also split their squad, with Mitchell Santner captaining both groups. For the first three ODIs, they named: Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner and Will Young.

For the last two ODIs, several Test players drop out to prepare for the Tests, and players such as Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Mitch Hay come in. Rachin Ravindra returns after missing the T20Is with an injury. New Zealand coach Rob Walter called it “a huge series for us,” with the 2027 ODI World Cup a year away.

Why this series matters

January’s result still hurts

When the teams last played an ODI series, in India in January 2026, New Zealand won 2-1, their first ODI series win in India. In the deciding match at Indore on 18 January, New Zealand made 337 for 8 and won by 41 runs. Daryl Mitchell scored 137 and Glenn Phillips also made a century. Virat Kohli’s hundred wasn’t enough. India now face the same opponents in New Zealand’s conditions, where seam movement and short boundaries at grounds like Eden Park change the game.

World Cup 2027 planning

With the next ODI World Cup about a year away, both teams are using this series to try out combinations. India’s split squads give chances to fringe players such as Naman Dhir, Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi and Yash Thakur. Watch how the selectors use Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as wicketkeeping options.

Momentum from the T20Is

India arrive in form. They won the third T20I in Wellington on 27 October by six wickets, chasing 199 in 13.2 overs, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 113 off 38 balls. That gave them an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, ESPNcricinfo reported. The fourth T20I is on 30 October in Auckland and the fifth on 1 November in Hamilton. The ODI squad is largely different, though, with Gill, Rohit and Kohli returning.
